Contentment

Contentment is a great virtue, though it may not attract one's attention at first. Those who are truly content are usually quiet about it. It is a pleasure to be in their company, because they are full, peaceful, and generous.

Most people consider amassing wealth to be their prime duty। But just see what physical, mental and spiritual strain is involved ! Even if all this can be endured, how many people actually succeed in getting rich? Very few are able to get as much as they want. After going through so much trouble to get it, one cannot keep it for very long. When we die, everything turns to dust. A king today may be penniless tomorrow.

The same goes for titles and honour. To acquire them involves all kinds of physical, mental and spiritual problems, often with damage to health and wealth. Even if you succeed, your life is spent worrying about how to maintain your prestige. In addition to this, social and political upheaval can break you. So after thinking over these things, we have to conclude that getting rich or going after name and fame can never be the aim of our life.

What can it be, then? Is there something which is unaffected by actions? Such a thing has to be related to soul. As far as accumulating wealth, titles and honour are concerned, we may succeed or fail, but the method we employ to get them definitely uplifts or degrades our soul. Obviously, the principal aim of life is spiritual upliftment, which can give true peace and happiness..

  11. very well sad .. but today every one is busy in collecting pennies and none think about earning respect and honour and definitely peace of mind
but as we know the truth of this era is corruption so how can one get peace of mind when they are busy in disturbing others peaceful life?

  14. Doc Divya,
    Nice post about Contentment --
@ - Contentment is a great virtue, though it may not attract one's attention at first.
A contented person looks like an Ageless, Wrinkled sage from the Himalayas. But, those wrinkles are full of wisdom and an inner power that can shake up empires with a single drop of an eyelid.
@ - Those who are truly content are usually quiet about it. It is a pleasure to be in their company, because they are full, peaceful, and generous.
This part reminds me of a few whom I have been with. They are CONTENT about everything they have done in life and are indeed very sober, suave and absolutely grounded in their happiness. Being in their Aura is always a "Bathing experience in their glorious presence, it makes us forget all of our woes to just sit with them"
@ - Most people consider amassing wealth to be their prime duty। But just see what physical, mental and spiritual strain is involved ! Even if all this can be endured, how many people actually succeed in getting rich? Very few are able to get as much as they want.
Bill Gates is the best example -- he has wealth, hard earned maybe or not, but he has it. Over 60,000,000,000 Dollars in his endowments. Yet he isn't content, he needs more, so he went after YAHOO Inc to go for a hostile takeover.
Can anyone guess, how many years Bill Gates might have from now, to live on earth? At the most till 120? Calculate that, convert these years he would live from now onwards into seconds and see if they even cross Sixty billion?
On the other hand is the APPLE Inc supremo, Steve Jobbs who recently told everyone that he is a Cancer patient (Pancreatic maybe) -- but he seemed a more contented man than Bill Gates to me.
Look at Warren Buffet, he is also one of the top five Billionaires, never content, he is still hungry.
If money could ever make a person Contented "There wouldn't have been a Buddha Avatara, in our traditions" -- Buddha set himself and the world an example "Renounce all Material wealth, because this is not what we came with, so we wouldn't need all this, when we leave"

  15. PART II - (Continued from previous comment)
@ - After going through so much trouble to get it, one cannot keep it for very long.

I have seen plenty of Multi-millionaires -- they don't have the heart to SPEND even 20 bucks to repair a "Broken toilet handle in their houses" this is a FACT!

@ - When we die, everything turns to dust. A king today may be penniless tomorrow.

Reminds us of Mahmood of Ghaznavi, who invaded India seventeen times and plundered all temples, places of worship and kingdoms to take away our wealth to his country. But when he was dying, he said "Place my hands outside the grave, so that all can see that I am taking nothing with me"

@ - The same goes for titles and honor. To acquire them involves all kinds of physical, mental and spiritual problems, often with damage to health and wealth. Even if you succeed, your life is spent worrying about how to maintain your prestige. In addition to this, social and political upheaval can break you.

Very true and very well said.

@ - So after thinking over these things, we have to conclude that getting rich or going after name and fame can never be the aim of our life.

All forms of sufferings are borne out of attachments. One should be always prepared to let go of the most precious thing we are attached to, the first. (I urge you all to watch the Hindi movie Baghban -- starring Amitabh Bacchan, Hema Malini to see how attachment works. Beautifully portrayed in it are the characteristics of human nature surrounding greed, riches, wealth, inheritance and contentment or lack, thereof.
@ - What can it be, then? Is there something which is unaffected by actions? Such a thing has to be related to soul.
    The soul it is, indeed.
@ - As far as accumulating wealth, titles and honor are concerned, we may succeed or fail, but the method we employ to get them definitely uplifts or degrades our soul. Obviously, the principal aim of life is spiritual upliftment, which can give true peace and happiness..
The Spirit knows about it, it is very well prepared for each leg of its material journey. It has more to do with "We are not Human beings having a Spiritual experience, but we are Spiritual beings having a temporary sojourn here and all experiences we have here, might just be left behind here itself" The choices that are given to the Spirit are so multifarious and abundant by nature that it finds joy in making the most difficult of all choices on its path to the eternal joy, called the "Communion with the Eternal Breath"

  17. True contentment is a virtue and is a result of a low profile life style .Today most of us are in a rat race ,which leads us no where .The impression (The Karmas )travels with the soul ,as it leaves the body .
Good job done by you as always .
