Are we really progressing ?

India unfortunately is lacking leaders. There was a time when we had real heroes those who fought selflessly for our freedom and sacrificed their lives.

Now a days 'leaders' are replaced by diplomats and politicians , who are hardly concerned with the development or progress of our country They are not at all bothered by the grievances of common man. 40 percent population is living below poverty line but the rich are getting richer. The difference is growing between rich and the poor with a great speed.

They have tall claims that India has developed a lot but the truth is that we have lost our grip on many significant fronts With this type of ineffective leadership India will lead nowhere.

We Indians copy the Western culture on silly counts like fashion , openness and homosexuality but unfortunately we do not follow the British way of tackling the awful mess . The journalism their is admirable. They do not hesitate or fear in criticizing, exposing or taking names of their politicians. Their efforts are determined and meticulous in contrast to our media where they are reluctant to question or expose their colleagues , as it happened in Radia's case.

Worst part is when our media dares to question the PM , he is either unavailable or protected by his advisers, unlike Cameron who made himself available to face all the criticism in west .

Majority of countries are victim of terrorism but the selfish politicians of India have developed the habit of consoling themselves and fooling the general lot by saying - "Spirit of Mumbai" . Rest of the world have learnt their lessons from terror attack and have improved their law and order except India where our leaders have mastered the art of making tall claims and sympathizing with the victims for a brief period. Mumbaikars are living in fear of bomb attacks for past two decades but our government seems reluctant to take any effective measure.

There is no improvement in the facilities at a grass root level even . The current political dissonance and institutional attitude do not inspire confidence.

Indian media needs to stop sensationalizing everything and should cover issues with sincerity and due diligence . It should be a strong corruption free crusader against injustice.

India is not keeping pace with its development needs We need to delink politics from reform processes and improve our regulatory framework to reach our global leadership goals. We must not tie ourselves with allies which adversely affects our autonomy. We need to be more strategic in developing relationship with neighboring countries.

Government needs to confer 'infrastructure' status on all fronts Brain drain should be checked and measures should be taken for reverse brain drain . We need to look into the reasons for people reluctant to serve their own country . The lack of innovation and quality research and development is putting our country at lower graph. Growth in jobs are needed . There should be major expansion in all spheres , be it health , education , science or security . Our products are not making any remarkable impact in global market . For our country to progress we need to have thoughtful leaders who do not ignore the demands of one billion population and resonate well with the common lot.

  2. absolutely right .. we need a better leadership, better media,.... better , educated and aware voters who know both their rights as well as duties ....

i agree with you a hundred percent . there need to make a lot of changes, and referendums too need to be considered in our democracy which is the largest in the world .

  3. "People of every country gets the type of govt.they deserve"Mr Meenu Masani, wrote in his book The Mankind about 50 years back.
It is easy to blame others but if one sincerely talks to one's self ,I am sure answer would be yes. Each and every one only talks keep on doing the undesirable ,when it comes to self

  4. Most of politicians today are crooked. There only aim is how to make money and win next election. Aim of politics is not to serve people but to serve one's family these days. Bureaucrats are also looting because of absence of that.
But the basic cause are we citizen of India ourselves. We don't want to take any responsibility ourselves individually. Our day today actions increase corruption and chaos rather than order and honesty.
We need to put our act in order first individually, then collectively.
Because good habits come out of good society and so does good people to replace these crooked ones.
You're spot on, we copy bad things from west but not there good work ethics.

  6. Thanks Dr. Divya for such a nice post. In fact our leadership has degraded itself to such a low level that no shame can absolve them of their misdeeds. Rather they have made the job more difficult for the future generations.

  7. Divya, while I agree that Indian politicians can learn from the way UK has tackled the Murdoch scandal and how even the British prime minister had to answer tough questions in front of every body, I wouldn't call "openness, homosexuality" as "silly".

Now I don't know in which context you looked at those other things but openness of society, rights of women, right of sexual orientation, etc. are not exactly followed in India, except for a small minority though being urban and articulate, perhaps they get some media attention.

BTW, thanks for coming to my Italian blog. You can always copy and paste it in Google translator for understanding! :)

  8. Good thought provoking presentation.

We are forgetting our 'sanskars' and great teachings. Most of our Leaders like Subhash Chandra Bose,Maharishi Aurbindo,Lokmaany Tilak etc. were having good knowledge of the spiritual texts which they also followed in their life.

Today every leader seems to fill his pocket by hook or crook.

  11. People dream of things .. but is there one who dreams of tings for this land .. for his motherland? A true leader is one who can dream, think of whats to be done, have a goal to lead the country to a dream that can become a dream of all, inspire and fire the souls ... We as a nation have lost that magic, we have become used to following, or being led ......

  12. There is no disagreement. I believe, there is a need to weed out the politicians who are primarily responsible for the mess. Probably in a country like India where poverty and illiteracy levels are so high, the democratic pattern does not seem to work. Is it possible to switch over to a different kind of governance.

  14. That is why India remains a soft state .We are playing with the so called growth rate where the percolation effect is absent .Growth for whom ?There is no govt in the country .The PM is like a crow scare bar .The so called High command call the shots .And that mentally retarded child is projected as our next PM.

  17. if we leave aside the comment made regarding homosexuality (it is abnormal to say that homosexuality is abnormal), the article talks about genuine issues...and genuine ones...

though like most such articles we fail to realize, that we get leaders that we deserve...it is because the crowd is wrong that the leaders are faulty!!

  35. it is the need of the hour that the females should take active participation. they are powerful in strength in the society and in numbers. today they are qualified more than males.secondly they are more sensitive regarding society problems. but today the atmosphere of politics and in social works gundas, criminals, are in these fields. the securities of the females are less. crimes are more in the society . females are not secured. so they are most welcome in politics and in social works.safety security and resprct must be there.
